Whitby Abbey

Bram Stoker was inspired to create Dracula by this Yorkshire town. On a still night, a medieval nun was imprisoned in Whitby Abbey. She broke her vows and can be heard pleading for help.

There are regular sightings of a macabre coach carrying drowned sailors dashing from St. Mary’s churchyard to the sea.

The Barguest Hound growls at those about to meet their maker. Beware of the local hobs (goblin like cave dwellers), who take pleasure in causing mayhem!

The West Lighthouse is haunted by a one armed ghost who lurks on the steep stairs trying to trip up visitors, so they’ll follow his fate and fall to their death.

Blickling Hall More Spooky Castles

Anne Boleyn was executed on 18th May so the tragic Queen is said to appear on the anniversary of her death, in her childhood home, Blickling Hall, with her head in her hand. As a punishment for failing to protect his daughter from Henry III, the headless ghost of Anne Boleyn’s father races across the 12 bridges between Blickling Hall and Wrexham every night.

Royal Memorabilia

With the coronation of King Charles III looming, will you be tempted to buy souvenirs?

I am not sure what will increase in value to leave to my son and haven’t seen anything I fancy so far.

My husband has bought a couple of coins.

I don’t fancy a tea towel as they are usually made of a very stiff material that wouldn’t dry a glass easily. The mugs look very chunky and thick. I like fine china for my coffee and on the rare occasions I drink tea.

What about Dartmoor? The haunt of wraths, fairies and spectres. Dartmoor’s kind hearted pixies have put fresh flowers every day on the grave of a broken hearted farm girl for over 200 years. The pixies are also said to lead lost people on the moors to safety.

Legend has it that Cutty Dyer, a troll, lives under a bridge in Ashburton. The troll waits to throw drunken people in the river.

One of the scariest ghosts, a 17th century noblewoman called Lady Howard, makes a nightly journey from Tavistock to Okehampton Castle by coach made from the bones of her four husbands, drawn by headless horses. She has the company of a big black dog with red eyes.

Are you brave enough to visit this vast wilderness in the dark?
